Individual differences in working memory within a nomological network of cognitive and perceptual speed abilities.

چکیده
It has become fashionable to equate constructs of working memory (WM) and general intelligence (g). Few investigations have provided direct evidence that WM and g measures yield similar ordering of individuals. Correlational investigations have yielded mixed results. The authors assess the construct space for WM and g and demonstrate that WM shares substantial variance with perceptual speed (PS) constructs. Thirty-six ability tests representing verbal, numerical, spatial, and PS abilities; the Raven Advanced Progressive Matrices; and 7 WM tests were administered to 135 adults. A nomological representation for WM is provided through a series of cognitive and PS ability models. Construct overlap between PS and WM is further investigated with attention to complexity, processing differences, and practice effects.

Processing resources reduce the effect of Alzheimer pathology on other cognitive systems.
UNLABELLED The cognitive abilities of older persons vary greatly, even among those with similar amounts of Alzheimer disease (AD) pathology, suggesting differences in neural reserve. Although its neurobiologic basis is not well understood, reserve may reflect differences in the ability to compensate for the deleterious effects of pathology by recruiting alternative or additional brain networks ...
متن کاملStudy of Numerical Processing Speed, Implicit and Explicit Memory, Active and Passive Memory, Conservation Abilities, and Visual-Spatial Skills of Students with Dyscalculia
Background and Purpose: Learning disorder is one of the common disorders in students, which can lead to the occurrence of educational problems and secondary disorders in them. Based on psychopathological criteria, dyscalculia is one of the subcategories of learning disorder. Children with this disorder have problems in perception of spatial relations and in different cognitive abilities. Theref...
متن کاملFaster, smarter? Working memory capacity and perceptual speed in relation to fluid intelligence
Numerous studies have found that working memory capacity and perceptual speed predict variation in fluid intelligence. Within the cognitive ageing literature, perceptual speed accounts for substantial ageing variance in working memory capacity and fluid intelligence. However, within young adults, the interrelationships among these three abilities are less clear. The current work investigated th...
متن کاملWhat cognitive abilities are involved in trail-making performance?
The cognitive abilities involved in the Connections (Salthouse, et al., 2000) version of the trail making test were investigated by administering the test, along with a battery of cognitive tests and tests of complex span and updating conceptualizations of working memory, to a sample of over 3,600 adults. The results indicate that this variant of the trail making test largely reflects individua...
متن کاملCognitive Profile of Children and its Relationship With Academic Performance
Introduction: Cognitive abilities are necessary for successful learning. Children with different cognitive ability levels may have diverse performances. The current study aimed at investigating the cognitive profile in children and its relationship with Academic Performance. Methods: The population of the current cross sectional study consisted of all students in Jajarm City, Iran. The subject...
